Vol. 87 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workers' Payment During Military Training.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he has received a proposal from the Donegal County Council to pay their workers for the time they were off work for training with the Local Defence Force and whether he intends to signify his approval of this proposal; and, if so, when.

It was feared that a general release of Local Defence Force personnel employed on local authorities' works might have an injurious effect on certain works of national importance such as turf production, bog development and the repair or improvement of roads urgently required for turf transport. Accordingly, the county surveyors were informed in May that at that particular time men should not be released from these works for attendance at Local Defence Force training camps but that an opportunity would be given to these men to attend such camps later in the year. Subject to this instruction, it has been found possible to approve the proposal of the Donegal County Council.

Am I to take it that this instruction has operated to prevent certain individuals being paid during the period when they were summoned by their military superiors to attend these camps?

But everybody who did attend was paid?

Provided he was properly released.
