Vol. 88 No. 1

Committee on Finance. - Vote 14—Irish Tourist Board.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £4,000 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1943, for a Grant-in-Aid of the Irish Tourist Board (No. 24 of 1939).

Would the Minister give us an outline of what has been done during the past year by the Tourist Board?

They have been preparing schemes of resort-development. One of these schemes will come into operation at Tramore in the course of this year and others may also be proceeded with. That depends upon circumstances. Furthermore, they have been authorised to plan substantial development along lines which could be undertaken when circumstances are more favourable as regards supplies. In other directions the work on which it was intended they should proceed has been delayed or held up altogether by war conditions, but I think we can use this board to an increasing extent as a means of finding useful methods of employment.

Does this board of itself decide the area in which the money should be spent?

The projects which it undertakes are intended to be commercially sound and financially remunerative. In each case it is anticipated that the property will increase in value, or that a source of income will be opened which will repay a large amount, if not the whole, of the cost involved.

Vote put and agreed to.
