Vol. 88 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Orders' Prosecutions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of prosecutions taken since September 1st, 1939, in respect of violations of the prices fixed for foodstuffs (for human beings), feeding stuffs (for animals), and other articles; and if he will state (a) the number of convictions, (b) the number of convictions which included a term of imprisonment, and (c) any remission of the fine or fines inflicted or imposed, and the period of imprisonment (if any).

Mr. Boland

A return prepared in July, 1942, gives the following figures as regards prosecutions in the District Court since 1st September, 1939, in respect of violation of price-fixing orders—viz:—

In respect of food for human beings:

Prosecutions

385

Convictions

243

Imprisonment was ordered in eight of these cases.

In respect of feeding stuffs for animals:—

Prosecutions

29

Convictions

24

Imprisonment was not ordered in any of these cases.

In respect of other articles:—

Prosecutions

117

Convictions

82

Imprisonment was ordered in seven of these cases.

From an examination of remissions of penalties granted during the three years 1st September, 1939, to 31st August, 1942, it appears that remission was granted during that period in only one of the above-mentioned cases. The remission in that case took the form of a reduction of the amount of the fine imposed.
