Vol. 88 No. 9

Death of a Deputy.

A Chinn Chomhairle—During the Recess the House has lost another of its members, the senior member for Sligo—Deputy Frank Carty, B.L.

The late Deputy was first elected in 1921, and had maintained an unbroken membership up to the time of his death. His long service did not in any way impair his sense of responsibility to his constituents whose interests to the very last had his untiring attention.

His association with the administration of local and county affairs commenced prior to his entry to this House, and on several occasions his colleagues in the County Council and other bodies showed their confidence in him by electing him as their chairman. He took a keen interest in the co-operative movement to which he brought great administrative ability and much practical knowledge as a farmer. During recent years he occupied the position of chairman of the largest and one of the most successful co-operative societies in the West of Ireland.

Frank Carty will, however, be best remembered by our people for the part he played as a soldier in the struggle for independence 20 odd years ago. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

I ask you, A Chinn Chómhairle, to convey to the late Deputy's widow and relatives the sincere sympathy of Dáil Eireann.

Deputies rose in their places.
