asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in respect of each of the non-commissioned ranks in the Army, (a) their present rates of pay; (b) the scale of allotments prescribed in the case of married men; and (c) the scale of allowances to the wife and for the children of soldiers.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pay and Allowances.
I assume that the Deputy intended to include privates in the term "non-commissioned ranks" and the following information is based on that assumption:—
(a) The present rates of pay of non commissioned ranks in the Defence Forces are as follows:—

d. |
|
Sergeant-Major |
7 |
6 per diem |
Battalion Quarter-master-Sergeant |

Company Sergeant |

Privates, Class III |

Privates, Class IV |

Privates, Class V |

Privates enlisted prior to the 14th October, 1926, are paid 6d. per diem in addition to the above rates.
In addition to the foregoing rates, the sum of 6d. a day is credited to the man's pay account and is treated as defered pay which will be payable at the end of the emergency. (b) The allotment, which is included in the marriage allowance payable to a soldier's wife, is a sum of 1/- a day, deducted from the pay of soldier on the married establishment. (c) The scale of allowances in respect of the wife and/or children of a soldier on the married establishment is as follows:—
s. |
d. |
|
Wife's allowance |
1 |
6 per diem |
One child |
1 |
0 per diem |
Two children |
2 |
0 per diem |
Three children |
2 |
6 per diem |
Four children |

9 per diem |

0 |
3 per diem |
If the soldier was admitted to the married establishment prior to the 3rd March, 1932, the rate for four children is 3/- per diem, but no allowance is payable for any additional child.
The allowance in respect of children is not paid in the case of a boy over 16 years and in the case of a girl over 18 years of age.
Mr. A. Byrne
Is the Minister aware that the amount allowed for each additional child after the fourth—3d.— would not buy a pint of milk?
I am aware that the position has been altered recently, as a result of my activities.
