Vol. 88 No. 13

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foot-and-Mouth Disease Compensation.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the promise made by him in Dáil Eireann to review cases of compensation for slaughter which occurred towards the end of the foot-and-mouth epidemic, he will now say if such cases have been examined, and, if so, if he will state (a) the number that have been examined, (b) the number in which adjustment of the compensation has been made.

The question of the compensation paid for animals slaughtered during the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease last year has been carefully reviewed. I am satisfied that in all cases, including those which occurred towards the end of the epidemic, a fair valuation was placed on the animals concerned and do not consider that adequate grounds exist in any case for further payments from public funds.

Would the Minister say whether he promised these people in South Tipperary that there would be a general review of their cases, when he met a deputation in Thurles?

Were they reviewed?

And there was no case for compensation?

And that is the reply.
