Vol. 88 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Press Censorship.

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defensive Measures if he will state if any censorship was exercised on newspaper comments on the results of the recent local elections; if so, to state generally the effect of such comments, and by what standard of defence measures was such censoring ruled.

I have had the files of the daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and reviews examined. Nearly all of them commented in one way or another on the results of the recent local elections in their editorial and news columns. Only in one case that I can trace was a deletion made—that of a weekly review, in which the writer of the editorial notes after commenting on the results of the local elections proceeded to make prognostications about the future and the question of international relations. A small portion of this comment referring to international relations was deleted. If the Deputy desires I shall send him particulars of the deletion made.
