Vol. 88 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Workers Wages.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is great discontent amongst Post Office labourers, porters and other lowly-paid workers on account of the difficulty of meeting the increased cost of living; and if he will see that they will be paid an increased wage, commensurate with the increased cost of living.

The majority of the lower paid Post Office classes have been granted increases as from 1st June 1942 under the Civil Service (Stabilisation of Bonus) (Amendment) Regulations, 1942. Classes whose remuneration is not calculated by reference to a cost-of-living index figure, e.g. quasi-permanent labourers in the engineering branch, are not eligible for increases under the regulations mentioned. Claims from such classes have been received and are being considered separately.

Could the Minister indicate when a decision is likely to be arrived at on these representations?

I hope very soon.
