Vol. 88 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Relief Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the great dissatisfaction which exists in rural areas owing to the various rates of wages paid under Government relief schemes; and if he will take steps to see that rates of wages are standardised, and that the rate of wages paid will not be less than those operating under the county council road work schemes in each county.

The Minister is not aware that dissatisfaction exists in rural areas in the circumstances referred to by the Deputy. Generally, the rate of wages paid on any employment scheme financed from the Employment Schemes Vote is the same as the rate paid for analogous work in the same district. It is considered that this is the fairest basis on which to fix wage rates for employment schemes, and it is not proposed to change it.
