Vol. 89 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Wheat.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state (a) the total quantity of wheat imported since 1st March, 1942; (b) average cost per barrel of same landed at an Irish port.

The publication of statistics of the kind asked for in the first part of the Deputy's question has been suspended since the outbreak of the emergency for reasons of public policy. The average cost per barrel of wheat imported during the period mentioned in the question was 65/10½d. per barrel, c.i.f. Since December 1st, 1942, however, reduced freights have operated on the Atlantic route and the present average cost of wheat shipped direct to Irish ports is 50/7½d. per barrel.

Is the 65/10½d. c.i.f. affected by the price of the wheat you got from Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

I do not know what the Deputy is talking about.

In striking the average price of wheat delivered in Éire from abroad, are you computing the average arrived at from the cost of wheat imported direct from Canada and the cost of wheat sent here from Great Britain?

All the wheat we imported came from the country of production.

What wheat came from Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

No wheat that I know of came from Great Britain.
