Vol. 89 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldier's Marriage Allowance.

asked the Minister for Defence if Gunner Stevenson, No. 5 Section Battery (No. 400808) became entitled to marriage allowance in June, 1942; if he is aware that the wife and child of this soldier are forced to pay 10/- rent, and live on the pay that is only intended to be adequate for one person; and if he will state why a marriage allowance has not been paid.

In accordance with the regulations governing the payment of marriage allowance, only those soldiers who had two years' continuous service in the forces on the 5th June, 1942, and were then married, became eligible for the issue of marriage allowance on that date. The allowance was issued, in addition, to certain men who had special qualifications and who were specially enlisted because of their qualifications.

Gunner Stevenson did not come within either category and was not eligible, therefore, for the issue of marriage allowance. A recent amendment has been made to the regulations, however, and, if it is found that Gunner Stevenson is eligible under the amended regulations, the allowance will be paid to him without delay.
