Vol. 89 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Inflationary Tendency.

asked the Minister for Finance to indicate whether any inflationary tendency has been observed in this country in the last two years, and to estimate how far this has been brought about by (a) the increased circulation of money in Éire due to earnings of citizens of Éire working in England; (b) Government borrowing and the spending of such borrowed moneys; and (c) any other cause.

In the present conditions of world war it is inevitable that inflationary tendencies should exist everywhere. The resultant inflation cannot be ascribed in precise proportion to the several causes in operation, but there can be little doubt that the causes (a) and (b) referred to by the Deputy are of much less significance than other causes, especially the high level of agricultural and other domestic prices, the considerable increase in wages, and the great volume of public expenditure on the Army and various emergency purposes.
