Vol. 89 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Explosives for Quarrying.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that work in the Benduff, Froe and Madranna slate quarries, County Cork, is likely to be suspended in a few weeks, in the absence of explosives, and whether he will take steps to secure such supplies of explosives as will enable the industry to keep going and a considerable number of workers to be retained in employment.

An allocation of explosives has recently been made to various users, including slate quarries, and Benduff, Froe and Madranna Slate Quarries Co., Ltd., will receive a quantity of explosives under these arrangements. Every effort will be made to maintain production in slate quarries, but, owing to the serious restriction in the imports of explosives, it will be possible to make available to all users, including quarry owners, only a proportion of the explosives used in normal times.
