Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allowances to Dependents of Lost Irish Seamen.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to pay weekly allowances to the dependents of Hector Young, Francis Treacy, and Michael O'Flynn, three members of the crew of the SS. Irish Pine, which was lost at sea last November; if he is aware that the parties concerned are in immediate need of financial assistance, and that the loss of the substantial contributions made by these seamen is a very serious-matter for them.

Pending inquiry allowances at the rate of 10/- per week were paid to the parents of these seamen for the period 23/12/1942 to 19/1/1943, inclusive, the shipping company having continued to make allotments from the seamen's wages up to the 22/12/1942. Arrangements have now been made for the payment of continuing allowances at the appropriate rates to the parents of Francis Treacy and Michael O'Flynn, with effect from and including the 20/1/1943. Unless it is decided in the meantime that the loss of the vessel was due to causes unconnected with the war, the allowances will continue up to and including 19/1/1944, when they will be subject to review in the light of the parents' circumstances at that date. The question of payment of a continuing allowance in the case of the parents of Hector Young is still under consideration.
