Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses' Pension Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether, in view of the fact that it is now over six months since he promised the Irish Nurses' Organisation that he would receive a deputation to discuss the question of a pension scheme for all nurses and other matters relating to nurses' conditions, and that it is three months since they sent him all the information for which he subsequently asked, he will fix an early date for the reception of the deputation.

I have not found it possible to arrange for the reception of this deputation so far, chiefly because the approach of a general election has made it necessary for me to give my personal attention to the great volume of work that arises on the revision of electoral areas, and also to the promotion of legislation to provide for the holding of an election in the exceptional conditions of to-day. I shall, however, make arrangements to receive the deputation as soon as possible.

Mr. Byrne

At a time when we read in the papers every other day of deputations to various Ministers, including himself, will the Minister say why this particular deputation is being put on the long finger, especially in view of the fact that the Minister and his predecessor declined on previous occasions to hear the nurses' grievances on the grounds solely that they had not sufficient data as a basis? The facts and figures are now available.

The Deputy has repeated the question which is on the Order Paper and I do not think it is necessary for me to repeat my answer.
