Vol. 90 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sweepstakes for Charities.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will introduce proposals to amend the Public Hospitals Acts, 1933 to 1940, so as to permit the running of occasional sweepstakes to provide funds for the various charitable organisations that are endeavouring to relieve some of the distress that causes under-nourishment, leading to illness and costly hospital treatment.

Mr. Boland

I am not prepared to introduce such legislation.

Is the Minister aware that there is a large and growing body of public opinion in favour of the diversion of some of the Sweepstakes money into other channels?

Mr. Boland

I am aware that the proceeds of the Hospitals Sweepstakes are not sufficient for the requirements of the Hospitals Trust Fund and the Irish Red Cross Society, and if we start to dissipate them any more amongst numerous bodies, there will be nothing at all.
