Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amendment of Workmen's Compensation Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is proposed to amend the Workmen's Compensation Act in the near future so as to provide increased rates of compensation for injured workmen and their dependents commensurate with the increase in the cost of living; and, if so, whether he will state if interested parties, including the trade unions, will be consulted before the Bill is put into final form.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer I gave to a similar question on the 21st instant.

Is there any compensation or any hope of compensation for the people referred to contained in that reply? Would the Minister not consider doing something practical to relieve the distress of these people in their present extreme circumstances?

I do not know whether the reply referred to would be regarded as satisfactory or not. I think if the Deputy studies it he will be able to make up his own mind about it.
