Vol. 91 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Italian Government Representative.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he will state if there is in this country an Italian representative officially accredited to the Government; and, if so, which of the Italian Governments is represented by such Minister.

Diplomatic representatives are not accredited by Governments to Governments, but by States to States. The Italian State is represented in this country by an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. The Minister is accredited by the King of Italy and represents the Government appointed by the King, that is to say, the Government of which Marshal Badoglio is the Prime Minister.

That means that we have recognised the Badoglio Government?

It means exactly what I have said.
