asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of persons in custody on the 31st March in each of the years 1940, 1941, 1942 and 1943, and on a current date (a) under the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, and (b) under Emergency Powers (No. 20) Order, 1940.; and, further, if he will state the number of such prisoners and internees released since the 1st June, 1943.

(Note. —The figures relate to members of unlawful organisations only— i.e., they do not include persons convicted or detained in respect of such matters as land agitation, breaches of Emergency Powers Orders relating to black market activities, trafficking in petrol coupons, etc. The numbers involved in these classes are comparatively small; they would not exceed 20 in all at any one time.)
