Vol. 91 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cottage Purchase Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, owing to the failure of the cottage purchase scheme to entice cottiers to purchase their cottages, he will take steps to amend the Act so as to give cottiers the right to will their cottages to a relative at death, provided that the local council is satisfied that the incoming tenant has the required status or qualifications.

I do not consider the course suggested by the Deputy to be necessary, and I do not agree with the allegation of failure of the cottage purchase scheme. I would refer him to Section 17 of the Labourers Act, 1936, which provides that on the death of the purchaser of a cottage the cottage may be used for the purpose of the accommodation of a person who is the widow, child or other relative of the deceased purchaser and who was resident in the cottage at his death.
