Vol. 91 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway and Mayo Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance what works he proposes to carry out in the Finny area (Counties Mayo and Galway) in the immediate future under minor relief schemes, or turf development schemes.

The Finny area lies in the electoral division of Owenbrin, County Mayo, and in the electoral divisions of Ross and Cong, County Galway. In the current winter's employment programme grants have been sanctioned for the improvement of three county roads, and for eight minor employment schemes in these electoral divisions. The county road works are located as follows: (1) at Derry Park and Tourmakeady, (2) at Dooletter and Kilbride, on the Clonbur-Maam road, (3) (a) section of America-Petersbourg road, (b) section of Inishdoorus Inn School road. The minor employment schemes comprise works on accommodation and bog roads in the townlands of Cappanacreha, Finny and Kilbride East (E.D. Owenbrin) and in the townlands of Dooros, Ballydoolough, Drumsnauv and Carrick Middle and Carrick East (Cong E.D.). Further proposals for the electoral division of Cong are under consideration, and it is possible that additional minor employment schemes will be sanctioned for this electoral division.

To save himself the difficulty inherent in similar questions being addressed to him, would the Parliamentary Secretary cause a copy of the minor relief schemes to be circulated to each Deputy in the various constituencies in which these schemes are being carried out, as was formerly the practice?

That would be a fairly substantial job, but if any Deputy happens to be interested, he can make application and we shall see what we can do for him.

The Parliamentary Secretary knows that Deputies from time to time make representations to the Board of Works to have certain schemes carried out, and will he cause a copy of the proposed schemes to be sent to each Deputy or made available for their inspection?

Some Deputies are interested in this particular subject and some are not. I think it is not unreasonable to ask those Deputies who are interested to address a request to us, when we shall do what we can in the matter.
