Vol. 92 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant of Gratuity to Volunteer's Parents.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will exercise the powers conferred on him under (Section 12 of the Army Pensions Act, 1932, to grant a gratuity to the parents of Volunteer Michael McCrann (late of 13 Garavogue Villas, Sligo), who was shot dead in the Gilhooly Hall, Sligo, on the 21st December, 1921, while on active service.

An application by Mr. Michael McCrann under Section 12 of the Army Pensions Act, 1933, in respect of the death of his son, has already been dealt with. No award could be made to him as it could not be established that Mr. McCrann was either wholly or partially dependent on the deceased, having regard to his circumstances at the time of his son's death.

Would the Minister not take into consideration the very straitened circumstances of the parents of Volunteer McCrann at present, which obviously must be, due to the loss of their son?

The case has been carefully examined on several occasions and it has not been found possible to bring it within the scope of the Act.
