Vol. 92 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Bog in Offaly.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is proposed to acquire for division the bog in the townlands of Kylenaglenny and Coolahansglester, in the barony of Garrycastle, and in the parish of Lusmagh, Banagher, County Offaly, as some local farmers have to travel miles for turf while this bog is in the immediate neighbourhood, and if he cannot proceed to acquire it on account of the emergency restrictions on the work of the Land Commission, whether he will deal with the question by an Emergency Powers Order.

There are no proceedings pending in the Land Commission for the acquisition of bog in the townlands of Kylenaglenny and Coolahansglester and it is not pronosed to initiate such proceedings. The Land Commission already have in their possession a large area of bog in the townland of Timolin in the same district. It is not proposed to make an Order under the Emergency Powers Act for the purpose of acquiring the bog in question.

Is the Minister aware that the farmers in that district are living in the centre of a huge bog and yet are unable to get supplies of turf? I think he should reconsider the matter and have this bog dealt with under an Emergency Powers Order. I also request him to send down an inspector, to whom the farmers living in the district will explain the great urgency in respect of dealing with this bog.
