Vol. 92 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Gangers.

asked the Minister for Finance how gangers or foremen on employment schemes are selected, and whether in future persons in receipt of, or eligible for unemployment assistance, if otherwise qualified. will receive preference in the making of such appointments.

The selection of gangers or foremen on employment schemes rests with the urban surveyors and county surveyors responsible for the execution of the works. The standing instructions issued to such officers provide that where suitable persons who have already had experience on similar works are not available, unemployment assistance recipients, if otherwise suitable, should be employed; and that, generally, no persons who have other means of livelihood should be employed if other competent and suitable men can be found who are in receipt of unemployment assistance.
