Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The National Income.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the source of the estimate of the national income for 1938 which he quoted in the Dáil on November 18; if he will also state whether or not the estimate has been published, and, if so, where; and if, in view of the desirability of having up-to-date information about the production of goods and services in the State, he will in future require the Statistics Branch of his Department to issue year-to-year estimates of the national income.

The estimate of the national income to which the Deputy refers was compiled by Professor G.A. Duncan, F.T.C.D. The figures are published in the journal of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society for Ireland, 1939-40, in a paper read by Professor Duncan on the 26th October, 1939, entitled "The Social Income of the Irish Free State," and in a statement on the "Social Income of Éire," by the same author published in the journal of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society for Ireland, 1940-41, pages 140-41. The question of the computation of official estimates of the national income is receiving the attention of my Department.
