Vol. 92 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reorganisation of Great Southern Railways Company.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if proposals for the reorganisation of the Great Southern Railways Company have recently been submitted to the Government and accepted by the Government; when it is proposed to communicate these proposals in detail to members of the Oireachtas; when it is expected that legislation to give effect to such proposals will be introduced; and whether it is intended to defer the taking of steps in furtherance of or in preparation for these proposals until the Houses of the Oireachtas have had an opportunity to consider and decide on same.

As the Deputy is already aware from announcements in the Press and from statements which I have made in the House, the scheme for the capital reconstruction of the Great Southern Railways Company has been accepted in principle by the Government and will be included in proposals for transport legislation which are at present in course of preparation. It is anticipated that the Government's proposals will be submitted to the Dáil at an early date when the House will have every opportunity to consider the proposed measures and to decide whether or not they are to be carried into effect.
