Vol. 92 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Rates of Pay.

asked the Minister for Defence whether, in view of the recent increases in the cost-of-living bonus granted to various classes of State employees, he proposes to increase the rates of pay for members of the Army.

It is not proposed further to increase the rates of pay of members of the Defence Forces. The Deputy will appreciate that as clothing, food and accommodation (including fuel) are provided at public expense for all members of the Defence Forces except those in receipt of lodging, fuel and light allowance and marriage allowance, any increase in the cost of basic commodities is automatically borne by public funds. A further increase has recently been granted in the rate of marriage allowance.
