Vol. 93 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Burning of Timber.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the large amount of timber being burned in the Curraghmore Forest, County Waterford, in compliance with instructions from the Forestry Section of his Department, and also that there is a great scarcity of fuel among the inhabitants of the surrounding districts; and, if so, if he will arrange for a segregation of timber to be destroyed and have it made available for local needs.

Mr. Boland

I am aware that there is a scarcity of fuel in the neighbourhood of Curraghmore Forest and when an area of the forest was recently being cleared for planting my Department arranged that what is known as the lop and top from felled trees and some light scrub should be offered for sale at nominal charges and all the material suitable for firewood was disposed of in this way. The only material burned was the very light stuff left on hands after these sales because nobody would buy it.
