Vol. 93 No. 14

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of County Tipperary Bogs.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he has received representations from a large body of local applicants for the division of the Derryville Bog on the Power-Lalor estate, Templetuohy; whether the bog was surveyed about three years ago and a division scheme prepared; whether he is aware that the local people are undergoing great hardships in having to travel long distances to other areas to cut turf of a much inferior quality; and whether he will take steps to have the Derryville Bog divided, so as to facilitate the local people in obtaining the fuel necessary for the use of their families.

The Land Commission are aware of the position in regard to the Derryville Bog which forms portion of the Power-Lalor estate, but division has been delayed by difficulties which have arisen in connection with the acquisition of other portions of this estate. These difficulties are now in process of solution, and the Land Commission will complete the acquisition proceedings and divide the lands as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that there is situated adjacent to Borrisoleigh a bog of about 45 acres on the estate of Captain Ryan, Inch House, Bouladuff, Thurles; that the local people are willing to work this bog and pay any expenses necessary in connection with its working; that, in response to local pressure, the county manager decided to secure the bog for the use of local people, but later rescinded the decision and permitted only a few local people to work on about three-quarters of an acre of it, with the result that about 87 local families (without transport facilities) are forced to bring their turf from a mountain bog situated some ten miles away; and whether, in view of these circumstances, he will take steps to acquire and divide the bog among the families in the village.

The Land Commission are unable to identify the bog in question from the particulars furnished, and the matter does not appear to be one which would come within their province. The bogs which the Land Commission acquire are intended for the use of rural allottees, not for the inhabitants of towns and villages.
