Vol. 94 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Cement.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the acute situation occasioned by the recent stand-still Order on cement; and if he will see his way to alleviate the hardships caused to tradesmen by allowing small quantities of cement, say, one stone, to be given out for urgent work.

I am aware of the difficulties arising from the shortage of cement. The quantity available to meet all requirements is exceedingly limited and, consequently, must be reserved for work of an absolutely essential character. I regret, in the circumstances, that I cannot accept the Deputy's proposal at present. The matter, however, will be reconsidered if and when the supply position improves.

I am sure the Minister appreciates that there are a number of very urgent jobs which require only a small amount of cement and that this Order has absolutely stopped all these repairs. I heard of a man who could not get a quarter stone of cement and he used a quarter stone of putty, which is about six times as dear.

The supply available is not sufficient to meet the requirements of all work in progress at present. It would be necessary to have a review of the situation before deciding on any relaxation of the present control so as to enable small quantities to be purchased without permits.
