Vol. 94 No. 8

Estimates, 1944-45. - Vote 72.—Damage to Property (Neutrality) Compensation.

I move:—

That a sum, not exceeding £11,750, be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1945, for Compensation and other payments in connection with Injuries to Property caused by the Dropping of Bombs from foreign aircraft and kindred incidents while the State is not engaged in war (No. 24 of 1941).

Would the Minister say what is the total sum which has been paid in compensation in respect of this Vote?

The total expended, including payments to local authorities, to 31st March, 1944, amounted to just under £392,000. Apart from any balance in respect of awards carrying a reinstatement condition that may remain due at the end of the year, the present Estimate should be sufficient to meet all payments.

Could the Minister say whether any steps have been taken since the damage was caused to recover the compensation from the authority which accepted responsibility in some of those incidents?

Steps have been taken and valuations have been made, but no part of the payment has yet been made.

But the liability has been accepted?

The liability has been accepted with regard to certain of those bombed areas.

Vote put and agreed to.
