Vol. 94 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Roads.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the following Land Commission roads are in a very bad state of repair: (1) the Rath Road; through the Corbally Estate, The Rath, Swords; (2) the Drynan Road, through the Cruise Estate, Drynan, Malahide, and the Nevinstown Road, through the Jolley Estate, Nevinstown, Swords; and if he will state what action is being taken in the matter.

The roads referred to by the Deputy were constructed by the Land Commission for the benefit of the allottees whose responsibility it is to repair and maintain them.

The "Rath" Road was constructed over four years ago at a cost of £1,000. The Land Commission have since, as an exceptional measure, expended a sum of £60 on its repair and there is a proposal similarly to contribute a further sum of £200 in the hope that the county council will take over and finish the repair.

The road in the townland of Drynan was constructed by the Land Commission about eight years ago, since when no effort seems to have been made by. the allottees to keep it in repair. The road has been inspected, but the Land Commission have not yet decided if they will undertake any repair.

The Nevinstown Road was constructed by the Land Commission about seven years ago at a cost of £342 as an approach road for the benefit of eight allottees and no complaint has been received from these allottees as to its condition.

It is open to the allottees who require assistance for repairs to approach roads to make application under the Rural Improvements Scheme to the Special Employments Scheme Office, 51 St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.

The Deputy was informed on the 3rd February, 1943, that the Land Commission cannot undertake the maintenance in perpetuity of roads constructed by them. That is not their function.
