Vol. 95 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Turf to Cape Clear.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that there is no turf available on Cape Clear, and that the islanders' small fishing boats are unable to deal adequately with the ferrying of it from the mainland and whether, if the Turf Board is empowered to employ lorries for turf transport, this power of the board will be extended to provide suitable boats to bring turf to Cape Clear and similarly situated places.

I am aware that difficulties have arisen in connection with the supply of turf to Cape Clear Island. There are ample supplies of turf available on the adjoining mainland, but the problem is one of transport. The matter has been under investigation recently and I am informed that the steps which have been taken should ease the situation.
