Vol. 95 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Cul-de-Sac Roads.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he proposes to introduce legislation whereby county councils can repair cul-de-sac roads, as many such roads are in a deplorable state, and the county councils are not permitted to repair such roads under existing regulations with money provided by the local ratepayers.

The answer is in the negative. It would be quite impossible to consider any such proposal. The mileage of roads maintained by local authorities represents approximately 16 miles per 1,000 of the population. If the maintenance of cul-de-sac and other roads which are not maintained by local authorities were to be so maintained, the present mileage of roads maintained out of public funds would be increased to such an extent that the cost of upkeep would impose an excessive and unfair burden on the general body of ratepayers.
