Vol. 95 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travel Permits.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the Order restricting the issue of travel permits for employment in Great Britain to persons living in towns of over 5,000 population will be relaxed now that the harvest has been saved.

The restrictions placed on emigration are reviewed by the Government from time to time and are modified or extended as may appear to be necessary. No alteration in existing regulations has recently been made but the matter will, in the ordinary course, come up for examination in the near future.

May I urge on the Minister the grave hardship to unemployed persons who are poor, more especially in Clones and Monaghan, who want to get work and are being caught in the general regulations made prohibiting them from taking up employment abroad?

The Minister has that particular point of view under consideration.

Will the Minister consider allowing these people to go abroad in order to be able to send money home for Christmas?

That particular problem is under consideration by the Minister.

I trust the Minister will make an early decision.
