Vol. 95 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Borstal Institute.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has secured a suitable site for a new Borstal institute; and when he contemplates being in a position to transfer the youths at present detained in Cork Jail to the new accommodation.

Mr. Boland

A site has been provisionally selected near Dublin. The Commissioners of Public Works are at present pursuing inquiries regarding the services which will be available at the site and until these inquiries are completed a final decision cannot be taken.

I am unable to give any definite information as to when I will be in a position to transfer the youths at present detained in Cork to the proposed new accommodation.

Is the Minister in a position to give the House an assurance that in connection with the building priorities fixed by his colleague, the Minister for Supplies, he will insist on an early priority being given to the requirements of this institution?

Mr. Boland

I had better take my place in the queue. I shall do my best.

Can the Minister assure the House that he will take an aggressive place in the queue?

Mr. Boland

I am not an aggressive person.

I did not think such an institution would be necessary in view of the article recently published over the name of Deputy Dillon, pointing out that the jails were such beauty spots.

The poor Deputy has not apparently discovered the difference between a Borstal institute and a jail —if he has ever been in one.

In view of what he wrote, Deputy Dillon must never have been in one.
