Vol. 95 No. 11

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heating and Cleaning of Rural Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of rural schools in Éire in respect of which heating and cleaning grants are made; the number of such schools in which grants are not claimed, and what arrangements have been made for the heating and cleaning of schools in the latter case.

For the financial year ended 31st March, 1943—the last year for which complete returns are available—the number of rural schools for which grants for heating and cleaning were made was 4,345. The number for which grants were not claimed was 281. The duty of making arrangements to ensure that the schools are adequately heated and cleaned, devolves upon the local managers. The fact that no claim was made for a grant in any particular case does not necessarily imply that such arrangements did not operate.
