Vol. 95 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Leix Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the lands of Mr. David Frame at Brockley Park, Stradbally, and Lamberton Park, Timahoe, County Leix, were offered for sale at a public auction on the 21st January, 1945, and were not sold, that the owner informed a deputation during the sale that he was prepared to give the lands over to the Land Commission, and that there is a local agitation for the division of those two farms; and, if so, if he is prepared to take action with a view to the division of those estates among smallholders and landless men in the area.

I am aware that the lands of Brockley Park and Lamberton Park were recently offered for sale at public auction and that these lands were not sold. I am not aware that the owner of the lands received a deputation in regard to their disposal nor what the result was of any discussion that may have taken place. Owing to emergency conditions the Land Commission are unable to undertake commitments or the investigation of such cases.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he now aware that the owner offered these lands to the Land Commission? May I ask if he proposes to review the circumstances of this case in view of the local agitation that there is for the division of the lands in question?

The Land Commission had no offer of the lands from the owner.

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply, I beg to give notice on behalf of Deputy Davin and myself that, with the permission of the Chair, it is my intention to raise this question on the Adjournment this evening.
