Vol. 95 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that high prices were charged for potatoes during the scarcity of the past few weeks, and, if so, if he will state the reasons, and if he is prepared to ensure that an adequate supply at reasonable prices will be available in the future.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The advance in potato prices was a consequence of a temporary reduction in supplies, due mainly to the recent severe frost.

Arrangements are being made to accumulate a reserve of potatoes for use later in the season should the necessity arise. The question of price control is also under consideration.

Is the Minister aware that, last week, potatoes were 2/6 a stone in Dublin, and were hard to get? Is he further aware that the growers, did not get anything like 2/6 a stone? People in Dublin are not able to pay 2/6 a stone for them.
