Vol. 96 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Veterinary Surgeons.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state with reference to veterinary surgeons: (a) the total number practising; (b) the number employed whole-time by his Department; (c) the number, if any, employed part-time; and (d) the total amount expended by his Department in salaries.

The total number of veterinary surgeons whose names are in the Veterinary Register of Ireland for 1945, is 395. This number includes whole-time veterinary surgeons employed by Government Departments and local authorities whose conditions of service debar them from private practice.

There are 96 whole-time veterinary surgeons on the staff of my Department.

The number of veterinary surgeons engaged on a part-time basis from time to time during the nine months ended 31st December last is 29.

The total amount expended in salaries during the nine months ended 31st December, 1944, is £46,489 14s. 9d.
