Vol. 96 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Live-stock Emergency Ration.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that a feeding stuff known as emergency ration is on sale in many parts of the country at £19 per ton; if he is further aware that the ingredients of that ration are chiefly bran, pollard and sugar-beet pulp, and that the prices of these ingredients are controlled at £10, £10 and £7 per ton respectively; and, if so, if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that the ration shall be retailed in future at a reasonable price.

I am not aware of the existence of any feeding stuff of the description given by the Deputy. In fact, under the Emergency Powers (Animal Feeding Stuffs) Order, 1944 (S.R. & O., No. 196 of 1944) made by the Minister for Agriculture it is illegal for any person to manufacture or sell any feeding stuff of which sugar-beet pulp is an ingredient. If, however, the Deputy will furnish fuller details to my Department, including the name of the manufacturer of the feeding stuff he has in mind and the districts in which it is being sold, I will have the matter further examined.

I shall give the Minister that information.
