Vol. 96 No. 16

Ceist—Question. Written Answer. - Fishing Industry in Waterford Harbour.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the serious condition of the fishing industry at Passage East and other centres in Waterford Harbour, and the great destruction of fish caused by seals in that area; and if he will state what steps he proposes to take to deal with the matter, which is one of urgency.

Following reports of extensive damage by seals to salmon fisheries and salmon fishing gear in Waterford Harbour last summer, an officer of my Department was sent to the locality and made investigations on the spot. As a result I agreed to an arrangement by which the Waterford Board of Conservators should make an ex gratia payment if necessary towards the expenses of a local marksman who would undertake the shooting of seals. No further representations have been made to us by the board since, and so far as I am aware this arrangement still holds good.
