Vol. 96 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Boot Vouchers.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the number of children's boots sent to Clonmel under the voucher scheme to each trader; and also the number of vouchers applied for in Clonmel.

When the footwear scheme was introduced public notice was given to retailers of boots and shoes that the supply of children's footwear for the purposes of the scheme would be arranged through the normal trade channels and that individual retailers who desired to participate in the scheme should apply to their ordinary suppliers for stocks of the official footwear. It was also indicated that retailers should consult the local officers of the public assistance authority so as to relate their orders for official footwear to the estimated local requirements under the scheme. There is, accordingly, no information in my Department as to the quantities consigned through the ordinary trade channels to any individual trader. The number of vouchers applied for in Clonmel Borough was 1,571 and 798 vouchers were issued, of which 320 were in respect of children of recipients of home assistance and 478 in respect of children of other classes coming within the scope of the scheme.
