Vol. 96 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conditions and Salaries of Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he has any proposals for the improvement of the conditions and salaries of the teaching profession in schools and colleges; and, if so, if he will, state the improvements proposed; and if he has consulted with the representatives of the profession on the matter, or if he proposes to do so.

As the Deputy is aware, it is the policy of the Government that basic wage and salary rates should not be increased during the emergency. Hence I am unable to announce any improvement in the basic remuneration of teachers.

Teachers are, however, in receipt of an emergency bonus at the rate of 11/- per week for a man and 9/- per week for a woman and they will continue to be eligible for any increase in emergency bonus rates which is approved for general application.

Does the Minister not think the time has arrived for a review of the whole position with regard to teachers and for a reorganisation of the whole educational system—pay, pensions and everything else associated with his Department?

That seems to be a separate question.

That is a much wider question.
