Vol. 96 No. 21

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dromore River (Monaghan).

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received representations with a view to having the Dromore River, Ballybay, County Monaghan, drained under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945; and if he proposes to take any steps to this end.

I have received and replied to the representations referred to by the Deputy.

The Dromore River is situated in the River Erne catchment area.

It would be impossible for me to give any indication, at this early stage, of when a scheme for that catchment area can be formulated.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary prepared to say that the claims of this drainage area are under consideration, in view of the fact that the Drainage Bill has been through the Oireachtas, and presumably schemes in connection therewith are under review in his Department?

The claims of some one hundred similar areas will also have to be considered.

Certainly, but all I am asking is whether the Dromore area is being considered on an equal basis with other schemes of a similar nature?

The Deputy may rest assured that this is an area that is also dear to my heart.

I do assume it, but I know the high principles of the Parliamentary Secretary would prevent him showing any preference for any area or any person in his constituency, and it is because I am apprehensive lest his exceptionally high sense of duty should make him lean backwards in connection with this drainage area that I venture to mention it on this occasion.
