Vol. 96 No. 23

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport Facilities in Western Counties.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that considerable dissatisfaction exists amongst business people and others in the town of Roscommon with the very poor service given by Córas Iompair Eireann in connection with the transport of Messrs. Guinness's products to that town and also to other towns in the West; that considerable delay has been occasioned in the transport of this company's goods due to the inability of Córas Iompair Éireann to provide sufficient wagons for this purpose; and, if so, if he will take steps to have the cause of this inconvenience and dissatisfaction removed at an early date.

The present urgent demand for transport for agricultural seeds, fertilisers and essential foodstuffs exceeds the wagon supply. In these circumstances, I am satisfied that it would not be in the public interest to divert wagons from this traffic.

I am advised, however, that the most pressing needs of Roscommon and other western towns have already been met and that the present abnormal demand on wagons will be eased somewhat in the next few weeks.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider providing a railway lorry service for the conveyance of live stock from Elphin and Strokestown fairs to the appropriate railway stations.

Applications for lorry services for the conveyance of live stock should be addressed to Córas Iompair Éireann.
