Vol. 97 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proceedings of Tribunal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any report was made to him concerning the proceedings of the tribunal at the hearing of an application by the Building Workers' Trade Union for a determination that that union shall have the sole right to organise bricklayers and stonelayers throughout the State; whether he is aware of the allegations which are being made concerning the conduct of the proceedings at the hearing of the application, and if, in view of such allegations, he is prepared to have an investigation made into the manner in which this tribunal discharged the functions imposed upon it by statute; and whether, if the machinery is defective for the purpose of protecting the human rights of the wage earners, he will take steps to amend the Act setting up this machinery.

No report has been made to me concerning the proceedings of the Trade Union Tribunal at the hearing of the recent application by the Building Workers' Trade Union; I have received no complaints regarding the conduct of proceedings at the hearing of this application. I have already reminded the Deputy that machinery is provided in the Trade Union Act, 1941, for the setting up of an appeal board if any trade union is aggrieved by a determination of the tribunal, and I do not consider it necessary to have an investigation into the manner in which the Trade Union Tribunal discharges its functions.
