Vol. 97 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schull and Skibbereen Railway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that, since the closing down of the Schull and Skibbereen Railway, the cattle fairs held in Goleen, Schull and Ballydehob have very much deteriorated, to the great loss of the farmers of that district; and, if so, if he will consider making representations to Córas Iompair Éireann to restore the train service on that line as soon as circumstances permit.

I am satisfied that adequate road services are available for the carriage of live stock at the fairs to which the Deputy refers and that there are no grounds for assuming that deterioration, if any, of these fairs can be attributed to the discontinuance of rail services.

The resumption of services on the Schull-Skibbereen line and on other lines on which services have been suspended cannot be considered until there has been a substantial improvement in the fuel position.
