Vol. 97 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation for Turbary.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is yet in a position to state when it is proposed to pay compensation to Mr. James McCann and Mr. William Champ, Drimsru, Rathangan, County Kildare, in respect of turbary acquired from them last year.

It is expected that further payments of compensation can be made shortly.

Will the Minister give any indication of what "shortly" means?

I had hoped that the payments would have been completed this month, but some legal difficulty has arisen which cannot be resolved owing to the absence on leave of the official of the Land Commission who is dealing with the matter.

These persons will, of course, receive compensation in respect of turbary acquired from them in the previous year as no legal difficulty can arise in these cases. But, on the general question, will the Minister endeavour to expedite payment of compensation in these cases where a considerable number are affected, as there is considerable complaint of the delay in paying compensation? While I appreciate the Minister's difficulty, I should like to know will he give a general direction to have the payment of compensation expedited in these cases?

Compensation will be paid without any avoidable delay.
