Vol. 98 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Footwear.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the profits made by tanners and wholesale leather merchants have increased under the controlled prices; and, if so, if he will take the necessary action to ensure that a reduction will be made in the price of footwear and of shoe repairs.

As a result of the examination of the accounts of individual tanners and wholesale leather merchants which has been undertaken by my Department, I anticipate that it will be possible to effect a reduction in the price of leather and a corresponding reduction in the price of footwear.

The charges for shoe repairs are not controlled. I am of opinion, however, that competition in the trade is sufficient to ensure that any reduction in leather prices, which may be secured, will be reflected in reduced repair charges. Shoe repairers are required by Order to display their charges for inspection by their customers.
